Starting a New Practice: Beginning Tai Chi

The hustle and bustle of the holiday season is upon us once again and many of us have some shopping to do. Do you have a friend or family member who is hard to shop for? Do you need a gift for someone who has everything? Maybe you are looking to expand your own horizons or longing for some some well deserved self-care in the new year. Well Tai Chi Revolution is here to help you! We are offering a new six week beginner class in the new year. If you’ve ever wondered about the practice of Tai Chi and its many benefits but didn’t know where to start or if you would enjoy it then this is the class to try. This class if for someone who has never done Tai Chi before, or for someone who wants to rejoin the practice of Tai Chi but needs a bit of a refresher. No experience is necessary. This class will cover the first 17 moves of the 108 move set. It’s a great way to dip your toe into the practice of Tai Chi and to begin to learn more about how your body and mind work together. It is known as a moving meditation and there is growing evidence that the regular practice of Tai Chi helps to maintain and improve strength, balance, and flexibility with the added benefit of calming your mind. Tai Chi is a slow motion low impact form of exercise where muscles are relaxed, joints are not fully extended, and each move can be modified and adapted to any physical limitations a person may have. You can begin learning this martial art in a supportive and friendly atmosphere in our studio setting. Plus… we are just a fun group of people and would love to meet you!

Symphony of Sacred Sound is Baaaacckk!

If you missed this amazing event last time around we hope to see you this time! Please join us for a SYMPHONY OF SACRED SOUND! A Sound Bath of Crystals, Singing Bowls, Chimes, Bells, and Tuning Forks. Sound healing uses the power of sacred music to reharmonize the entire body to its most beneficial state. When one hears the sound frequencies, the cells become attuned to that frequency and cause perfect harmony within the body. The different frequencies played during the sound bath will quiet the mind, decrease stress and anxiety, improve sleep, release physical and emotional pain to restore the body, mind and spirit to a sense of balance, creating a deeper sense of peace and well-being.

Please bring your own yoga mat, sleeping bag, blanket and pillows as needed for comfort (the studio is not carpeted) as you will lie on the floor. Some chairs will be available for those who cannot use the floor position or you may bring your own fold-up chair. This is a very transformative experience. I look forward to meeting you and seeing you there.

Event hosted by Lorri Mathewson, RMT, LMT has been using sound in her massage therapy practice for 30 years. She is a certified Biofield Tuning Practicioner and uses tuning forks in her healing practice.

Tai Chi Revolution Classes Resuming in May!

Hello to everyone! We’ve made it through the terrible winter spike of COVID and are now looking at lower rates of infection and the opportunities that vaccination provides for people who are able to be vaccinated. We are really excited to finally be able to say that the studio will now be opening up again in May and, depending on weather conditions, some classes may also be held in the park as we move into the summer months.

The first class will be on Tuesday, May 4th from 6 – 7:30pm at the studio (see information below for indoor protocols). This weekly Tuesday night class will continue to be a beginner class with a focus on fundamentals and learning the basic movements of the set. We will start the month off with some review to get everyone back into thinking about form and focusing on our mindfulness in the moment.

Our other on-going classes will also be starting back up in May. Check back here for updates as we put our schedule together. You can also find us on Facebook; search for “Tai Chi Revolution” to find our page. Join our group to stay in the loop on new class offerings, what’s going on at the studio, and for some interesting reading about Tai Chi in general!

Things to know if you are planning to attend a class at the studio. Everyone attending a class in the studio will be required to wear a mask for the entire duration of the class for the time being. We will provide hand sanitizer and continue to ask that everyone wash their hands when entering the studio. We will keep the windows open for the entire duration of the class for added ventilation and will ask everyone to continue practicing social distancing for the time being. Many of the people in our club are older, immune compromised, or have other health issues that the practice of tai chi helps with. Let’s all continue to look out for each other at home, in our studio and in our community. We look forward to seeing all of our members and new people back in class!!

Jump Start 2020 with a New Tai Chi Class!

Yikes!  It’s happening!  2019 is rapidly coming to a close and a new year is almost upon us.  For me, the start of a new year brings an opportunity to refocus on my own health and well-being and bringing balance back into my life.  That’s something that I often struggle with and Tai Chi has become an integral part of helping me maintain that mind – body balance.

Here at Tai Chi Revolution we’d like to invite you to join us for a new six week class (class details below).  This “beginner’s class” is designed to give students a foundation in Tai Chi movement principles, basic concepts and techniques, and the health benefits of regular practice. This class is for people who have no prior experience with Tai Chi or who have practiced Tai Chi but have been away from it and would like to get back into it.  This class is conducted in a safe, friendly, and supportive environment where everyone is welcome.

Our practice of Tai Chi is focused on the mind/body interaction and integrating slow, intentional movements to help strengthen, relax, coordinate and integrate the physical body and mind to improve overall health.  Regular practice of Tai chi can improve balance control, fitness, and flexibility, and may offer the benefits of reducing the risk of falls.  It is safe for people of all ages, as it does not put too much stress on the muscles and joints.   We hope to see you at our studio!

Benefits of Regular Practice of Tai Chi

When I started practicing Tai Chi I wanted to learn as much as possible as quickly as possible.  I had a difficult time hearing my instructor’s advice to just immerse myself in the moment and not worry about every tiny detail.  Over time, I found that my instructor was right <LOL>.  The goal of learning the many forms in the set was not to just “learn” the set, but to use what I was learning about each form to understand how my body moved in response to my “internal” commands.   I began to realize how watching my angles, shifting my weight, and paying attention to my body’s strengths and limitations allowed me to focus my attention more on fundamentals.  That in turn has helped me to better understand and master the flow of  body movements used in Tai Chi and to find the benefits of this “moving meditation”.

If you want to learn more about the importance of consistency in the practice of Tai Chi you may find this article from SlantedFlying.com helpful.

If you are interested in learning Tai Chi or want to get back into the practice, please feel free to e-mail us at TaiChiRevolutionCNY@gmail.com.   Check back soon – we will be posting the start date for a new beginners class soon!  We look forward to seeing you in the studio!
